Restoration of Sadar Sofa, Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah, Gulbarga (Karnataka)
The Sadar Sofa, a 357-year old wooden structure is located within the Dewdi adjacent to Hazrat Khaja Bande Nawaj Dargah, Gulbarga. Originally constructed as a residence of Sajjada Nashin has three rooms in an axial alignment at various levels for the purpose of reception, private area & sacred area at the end. The structure has high significance by its associational values (the hereditary successors of Hazrat Khaza Bande Nawaz continue to stay at this place), architectural values (architectural ornament, construction methodology, spatial organization – wooden carvings in the ceiling panels, wooden colonnade on the front façade with ornate capitals reflecting the architectural character of mid-17th century, organization of spatial layout in a hierarchical manner). By mid 20th century, the structure was abandoned as a residence due to its deteriorated state, however, the religious practices associated with the structure continue to be practiced till today from the same historic structure.
The Deccan Heritage Foundation has played a proactive role in initiating the conservation work by explaining the importance of protecting the historic fabric of this ancient monument.
The visionary Sajjada Nishin, Dr.Khusro Hussaini, understanding the true values of the authentic preservation of a historic edifice, has taken the initiative to restore the ancient monument with DHF technical advice.
